Bearded Pig Forge

From Coal Fire to Hand-Forged Craftsmanship, Discover Bearded Pig Forge’s Historic Blacksmithing, Custom Tools & Courses in the Heart of Quex Park. Bearded Pig Forge is run by Spike, a skilled blacksmith with a long-standing passion for the history and craft of traditional blacksmithing. Driven by a deep respect for heritage techniques and hands-on craftsmanship, Spike made the decision to pursue blacksmithing as a full-time career, creating distinctive forged pieces using time-honoured methods at the anvil.
Spike’s journey into blacksmithing began with a foundational series of courses with Ross Berry at Kaos Blacksmiths, where he gained the essential skills and techniques that would shape his future practice. As he continued to work at his anvil and forge, he developed his own style, combining classic methods with a growing desire to explore historical forms and practical tools. Over the years, self-directed learning and hours at the coal fire have allowed him to expand his skill set to include mixed-medium work, from blades to specialized tools. This deep interest in history guides much of what Bearded Pig Forge produces. Spike transports himself into the mindset of artisans of the past, studying and recreating shapes and techniques from multiple eras. While much of his work is inspired by designs suitable from the Migration Period through to the late medieval era, he also appreciates later periods, particularly the 17th and 18th centuries, and sometimes crafts replicas and historically influenced pieces from those times as well.
At the heart of Bearded Pig Forge is the art of hand forging. Every piece produced begins life in a traditional coal fire, where metal is heated, hammered, and shaped entirely by hand. Unlike mass-produced items, these tools and knives are refined by eye throughout the process, meaning no two are precisely alike. This commitment to small-batch, hands-on making ensures not only beauty but also functionality.
Bearded Pig Forge isn’t just a place where objects are made, it’s also a space where others can learn to make them. The forge offers hands-on courses that introduce students to the basics of blacksmithing and blade making. Held in a workshop on the grounds of Quex Park, these experiences are designed for beginners and enthusiasts alike, running from morning to late afternoon and including all necessary personal protective equipment. From one-day introductory knife forging workshops to longer courses that cover heat treatment, bevel shaping, and handle fitting, participants learn traditional techniques while creating something of real value. The sessions balance safety, technical instruction, and creative exploration, often resulting in a sense of accomplishment and deeper appreciation for the craft.

Absolutely loved my knife making course - Spike is so knowledgeable and passionate about blacksmithing.
